Language Learning In The Workplace: Bridging Communication Gaps

Hi 👋 my name is Grace, and I'm a certified language enthusiast. I've been studying Cantonese for four years, inspired by my wonderful partner from Hong Kong (shameless plug @jay.w.art). Before that, I spent two years learning Korean, and earlier, I studied Spanish in school. My language-learning journey has led to incredible personal growth and positive changes in my life, including bringing Jay and me closer together. This made me wonder, how could these benefits extend to my professional life? This curiosity is what inspired me to write this blog.

For example, non-native English speakers might face misunderstandings, feel reluctant to speak in meetings, or need more time to comprehend and be understood. I know this feeling first-hand; traveling in Hong Kong (a largely homogenous society) and trying to use my very rusty Cantonese, certainly put me in some very anxious and admittedly embarrassing situations (usually I accidentally say something rude or I sound like a robot and people laugh at me; although it’s usually always in good fun).

Benefits of Language Learning

From complimenting my mother-in-law's soup to sharing simple daily observations, like commenting on the weather or ordering a pineapple bun at a local cha chaan teng, these interactions highlighted how language skills bridge gaps and create meaningful connections with others, showcasing the impact of even small efforts in communication.
